PURPOSE: A protocol converting apparatus in an ATM is provided to improve a protocol conversion function by allowing an input/output controller to perform the protocol conversion function and obtain a performance required for a system even though a processor with the protocol conversion function is less mounted in a system. CONSTITUTION: A CPU(20) sets up or release a traffic call in response to traffic call set-up or release request according to input of an ATM cell or fast Ethernet data, and makes or updates a corresponding lookup table. An input/output controller(10) performs an error searching function of a data inputted according to set-up of a traffic call, and converts an ATM cell into a fast Ethernet data and the fast Ethernet data into the ATM cell according to the lookup table made in the CPU(20).
