A polyester having a satisfactory color tone a high value of L and a low value of b and a reduced acetaldehyde content is obtained with a catalyst comprising a product of the reaction of A at least one of a titanium compound 1 represented by the following general formula I and a titanium compound 2 obtained by reacting the titanium compound 1 represented by the general formula I with an aromatic polycarboxylic acid represented by the following general formula II or an anhydride thereof with B a phosphorus compound 3 represented by the following general formula III.
