PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a graft copolymer of a partially deacetylated chitin or chitosan without a catalyst. SOLUTION: A partially deacetylated chitin or chitosan and a monomer selected from the group consisting of a lactone, an amino acid N-carboxy anhydride, and an N-alkylamino acid anhydride are reacted in the presence of water. The grafting reaction of the partially deacetylated chitin or chitosan progresses even without a catalyst, because the partially deacetylated chitin or chitosan is swollen by the presence of water and the reactivity of an amino group improves.
