PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a pencil lead having an improved inverse correlation between flexural strength and density. SOLUTION: In a method for producing a pencil lead using a material essentially composed of a binder and an extender as principal components and thermally treating the material after kneading and molding into a small-gage wire, the method for producing the pencil lead is specified by essentially containing an ester of benzoic acid and a glycol as a component of the material.
