PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface treating method for a cast iron member which prevents the crystallization of chill in a surface layer part of the cast iron member and reliably removes graphite from the surface layer part of the cast iron member. SOLUTION: The surface 12 of the cast iron member 11 is irradiated with a high density energy beam 13, the surface layer part 11a of the cast iron member 11 is melted and a fusion part M is formed, and an unmelted part G which is austenitized is formed around the fusion part M. Graphite is floated to the upper part of the fusion part M by utilizing a specific gravity difference, thereafter, the fusion part M is solidified in such a state, a ferrite which does not crystallize chill is formed and martensite is formed around the ferrite. Finally, a surface part containing graphite which positions on the upper part of the ferrite is removed by cutting work, or the like, and thereby, the surface treatment of the cast member is completed.
