PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element that causes no uneven display even in the case of lighting over a long time. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element where a liquid crystal is placed between two substrates in contact with each orientation film of the substrates on one side of which an electrode is formed and the orientation film is formed on the electrode and a coating film made of the same material as that of the orientation film is formed on the other side of the substrate on which no electrode is formed. The area of the coating film is selected to be equal to or larger than the area formed by a seal material to confine the liquid crystal in the panel face.
