PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens which is sufficiently small despite its high performance, wherein a lens diameter (maximum light effective diameter) of a first group is small in particular. SOLUTION: The first group G1 consists of three lenses comprising, from the object side, negative meniscus lens L1 with a convex surface turned to the object side, a negative meniscus lens L1 with a convex surface turned to the object side, and a positive lens L3 with a surface having a large curvature turned to the object side. The surface on the side of an image of the negative meniscus lens L2 of the first group G1 is an aspheric surface. When the radius of curvature of the surface on the side of the image of the positive lens L3 of the first group G1 is defined as R6 , and a maximum image height as Y', the following conditional expression is satisfied: -0.05<;(Y'/R6 )<;0.05.
