PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material of the equipment for hydrolyzing 5-(2- methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin as the raw material for methionine, having high corrosion resistance, good at hot processability at issue in equipment processing and reduced in the risk of breakage due to thermal expansion/ contraction. SOLUTION: This material of the equipment for the step of producing methionine by hydrolyzing the 5-(2-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin in the presence of an alkali is a stainless steel including at least one component selected from the group consisting of 16.0-35.0 wt.% Cr, 1-6 wt.% Mo, <=1.0 wt.% Ni, 0.1-1.0 wt.% Nb and 0.1-1.0 wt.% Ti.
