PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document carrying device which can avoid defective carrying of a document without fail immediately after the start of the drive of a PS roller when the back face of the document is read out in a device of such constitution that a reversal roller and the PS roller are driven by one motor. SOLUTION: A paper discharge roller 33 depends on the rotation of the motor 70. That is, the motor 70 is rotated in the normal direction to drive the roller 33 in the direction to carry the document 3 in the document discharge direction and is rotated in the reversal direction to drive the roller 33 in the direction to carry the document 3 in a reverse carriage passage 36. When the motor 70 is rotated in the normal direction, the PS roller 32 is also driven in the normal direction to send the document 3 to a document reading position, and when the motor 7 is rotated in the reversal direction, a clutch 71 is released to stop the rotation of the PS roller. In this case, when the reversal rotation of the motor 70 is switched to the normal rotation, the drive force of the motor 70 is transmitted to the roller 33 delayed specified time from the start of the normal rotation of the motor 70.
