SOLUTION: In repeatedly performing a focusing operation in a continuous AF mode, a time interval for restarting and reference variation of a focus evaluation value in performing restarting are set in accordance with photographing conditions, etc. As to how to set the time interval and the reference variation, a restarting time interval is made long and the restarting level of the focus evaluation value is lowered in the case restarting is performed and an AF operation does not have to be frequently performed. For example, as the elapsed time of a timer that starts clocking after the first focusing operation becomes long, a restarting time interval is made longer and the evaluation value level of restarting is made lower.
