PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable speed control device for an automatic transmission capable of preventing the occurrence of two-stage shock and shortening a double shift time in the double shift simultaneously shifting two engagement elements and two release elements. SOLUTION: When it is determined that a sixth speed gear attained by engaging a 2-6 brake 2-6/B with a high clutch H/C is shifted to a third speed gear attained by engaging a 3-5 reverse clutch 3-5R/C with a low clutch LOW/C during traveling, the 2-6 brake 2-6/B is released in a completion range of a first shift process, the high clutch H/C is released in the completion range of a second shift process, the 3-5 reverse clutch 3-5R/C is engaged in the completion range of the first shift process, the low clutch LOW/C is engaged in the completion range of the second shift process, and the release capacity of the high clutch H/C is sliding controlled so that the change in the gear ratio is not stopped in the gear ratio range equivalent to the fifth speed gear, or an intermediate speed gear stage. |
