METHOD FOR PRODUCING 5-PHENOXYCARBONYLBENZOTRIAZOLE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 5-phenoxycarbonyl-benzotriazole represented by the formula (I) in which operation is relatively simple and treatment of by products is relatively easy by using 1H-benzotriazole-5-carboxylic acid represented by the formula (II) as a raw material. SOLUTION: 1H-Benzotriazole-5-carboxylic acid represented by the formula (II) is reacted with diphenyl carbonate represented by the formula (III) to provide 5-phenoxycarbonyl-benzotriazole represented by the formula (I). The diphenyl carbonate represented by the formula (III) is used in an amount of usually >=1 mol based on 1 mol 1H-benzotriazole-5-carboxylic acid represented by the formula (I). The reaction is usually carried out in the presence of a base or a metal oxide. The base is preferably an inorganic base such as an alkali metal carbonate, an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide or an organic base. The pKa of the organic base is preferably >=7.2. The reaction is usually carried out in a solvent such as aprotic solvent.
