PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera for appropriately calculating a focus evaluation value in accordance with a photographing condition related to a photographing distance up to a subject in the camera for using an imaging signal of an image pickup device to perform a focusing operation with a contrast method. SOLUTION: The image pickup device 103 images a subject image through a photographing lens 101. A focus evaluation value is respectively calculated at each lens position while moving a focusing lens between the shortest position at a close side and the most end position at an infinite side. The focusing operation of the photographing lens 101 is stopped at a lens position where the focus evaluation value shows a peak value. In the case a long-distance view mode is selected, a focus evaluation value of the infinity side is weighted. Thus focusing on a subject at a long-distance view side is quickly adjusted.
