PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an array waveguide grid element which is easily integrated together with an LD/SW/Gate/AMP/waveguide type PD and is easily connected to an optical fiber by connecting a high mesa waveguide structure and a buried waveguide structure. SOLUTION: The array waveguide grid element is constituted of one or more input waveguides 1 made of a high mesa waveguide structure partially or throughout, a first slab area 2, an array waveguide 3, a second slab area 4, and one or more output waveguides 5 connected to the terminal part of the slab area 4. Both of input/output waveguides 1 and 5 of the element are provided with converting connection parts of high mesa/buried waveguides 8a and 8b, and the slab area side part having a waveguide width w1 and the end face side part having a waveguide width w2 are connected by a transition part to make the waveguide width narrower so that the spot size of the waveguides may be extended to the same size as a normal fiber, and thus the element is easily connected to fibers. |
