PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which has a large opening degree enough to display a high-contrast image and also has spacers having no decrease in spacer strength. SOLUTION: The display element which displays a plurality of pixels by driving colored particles with an electric field has the spacers formed so as to deter the particles from spreading and moving in plane directions of a substrate and also put its substrates at a specific distance from each other. The spacers are formed on a grating when the display element is viewed from the plane side of a display substrate. In both the horizontal and vertical directions of the spacers formed on the grating, spacers 122 which are thicker (i.e., having longer distances in the plane directions of the substrate) than a plurality of spacers 121 which are thin (i.e., having short distances in the plane directions of the substrate) are formed by the spacers 121 (e.g. every three spacers) are formed. Consequently, the strength of all the spacers can be secured.
