PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet stacking device and method therefor capable of shortening the time of load transfer in the operation to be made using an up- and-down stacker. SOLUTION: At the time of starting the stacking operation, the ejection end 31a of a transport conveyor 31 is located at the undermost while a stacking table 32 is positioned at the uppermost as shown in (a). Stacking the sheets 3 is made by the transport conveyor 31 whose ejection end 31a rises until the stacking height attains 1/2 of the maximum height as shown in (b). When the stacking height exceeds it, stacking the sheets 3 is performed while the stacking table 32 is lowering as shown in (c). When the table 32 attains the undermost position and a sheet pile 6 reaches the maximum stacking height, sheet ejection from the conveyor 31 is stopped as shown in (d). The sheet pile 6 is carried out after the table 32 has risen to the carryout position as shown in (e). In parallel therewith the ejection end 31a lowers to return to the undermost position.
