PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately maintain balance of fuel spray penetration and tumble flow intensity varied with re-circulation of exhaust gas in stratified combustion operation of an engine. SOLUTION: In a spark ignition type direct injection engine igniting air-fuel mixture under a condition the same is stratified around a spark plug by injecting fuel from a fuel injection valve 18 to oppose to tumble flow generated in a combustion chamber 6 in stratified combustion operation of the engine, a cylinder inside temperature detecting means 57 detecting temperature in the cylinder is provided, and at least one of a penetration control means 52 controlling the fuel spray penetration higher as compared to a standard value as temperature of inside cylinder gets higher in stratified combustion operation of the engine and a tumble flow control means 54 controlling intensity of the tumble flow lower as compared to a standard value as temperature of inside cylinder gets higher in stratified combustion operation of the engine.
