PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder and a recording method employing such a recording ribbon as the need for high accuracy of the widthwise dimension of a reference mark indicative of the head position of the ink layer in a recording ribbon can be eliminated and accurate heading of the recording ribbon of a specified color can be realized without lowering the use efficiency of the recording ribbon. SOLUTION: Ribbon feed is performed for one color of a recording ribbon applied with a reference mark indicative of the head position of each color at the time of initialization. Heading of the first color is performed by determining a slice level for identifying the reference mark from the number of pulses between the marks being detected at that time. In the subsequent printing, heading of a specified color is performed by determining a slice level based on the number of print sheets.
