PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focal plane shutter for a camera which makes it possible to suitably arrange a motor for operating a set member while keeping a shutter unit compact. SOLUTION: The motor 17 is arranged in one side area of an opening part 1a while having its rotary shaft vertically at a distance from the set member 12. The rotation of this motor 17 after being transmitted to a gear 22 through a speed reducing gear train has its plane of rotation converted by a cam plate 21 and a converting member 23 to rotate a transmission member 13 on a axis 1u and the rotation is transmitted to the set member 12 through a link 14. Then the transmission member 13 and part of the link 14 operate in a hollow 1d of a shutter base plate 1, so even when its operation area is put over the motor 17, the size of the shutter unit along the optical axis need not be made large.
