PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the structure under the floor of an elevator car. SOLUTION: A drive device 20 is arranged on top of a hoistway 1. A rope 30 is made a detour so that the projection of the rope 30 made from the perpendicular direction doesn't overlap the projection of the elevator car 10 made from the perpendicular direction. The car 10 is hung like a well bucket through inversion pulleys 42 and 54 provided in a pair of side faces 12 and 13 of the car 10 opposing to each other. The inversion pulleys 42 and 54 constituting a hanging point for hanging the car 10 by the rope 30 are positioned at a point on or near the perpendicular line passing through the center point of gravity of the car 10 when viewed from the direction perpendicular to the side face 12.
