PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely detect a breakdown of a shutoff rod in the condition that the shutoff rod of a crossing gate is closed in a breakdown detecting device for detecting a breakdown of the shutoff rod of a shutoff device for shutting passing in a crossing of a railway or in an outlet and an inlet of a parking. SOLUTION: This breakdown detecting device for detecting a breakdown of the shutoff rod 11 to be controlled for opening and closing by the crossing gate 10 is provided with a detecting unit 13 for detecting that the shutoff rod 11 is closed in the horizontal condition, a transmitter unit 14 provided at a tip side of the shutoff rod 11 to transmit the electromagnetic wave, and a receiver unit 15 for receiving the electromagnetic wave from the transmitter unit 14 of the closed shutoff rod 11. In a condition of the shutoff rod 11 of the crossing gate 10 closed, a breakdown of the shutoff rod 11 can be detected on the basis of the detecting signal from the detecting unit 13 and the receiving signal from the receiver unit 15, and this breakdown detecting device can be used for various shutoff device.
