Esters of aliphatic α,#-dicarboxylic acids having 3-12 carbon atoms or of aromatic dicarboxylic acids are made by treating the acids with linear olefines having 4-20 carbon atoms in the presence of an aryl mono- or disulphonic acid or of an ion-exchanging arylsulphonic resin as catalyst and in the presence also of an organic or inorganic per-compound. Specified acids which may be esterified are malonic acid, succinic acid, 2,3-dibromosuccinic acid, pymelic acid, adipic acid, 3- and 4-chlorophthalic acids, phthalic acid, 4-nitrophthalic acid, 4-bromophthalic acid and 3- and 4- methoxyphthalic acids. A number of suitable olefines are specified, as also are several sulphonic acids and many per-compounds. The products generally include semi-esters as well as diesters. Examples are given. |
