PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyphenol resin which gives a cured product having sufficient flexibility and flame retardancy and has a small content of chlorine impurities in the resin. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a polyphenol resin comprises subjecting phenol to a condensation reaction with bischloromethylbiphenyl, bismethylolbiphenyl or bismethoxymethylbiphenyl, subsequently removing unreacted phenol, further reacting again with bischloromethylbiphenyl in the presence of a solvent having a low water-solubility and a boiling temperature of at least 100 deg.C, adding water to the system, dissolving with stirring in the water hydrochloric acid remaining in the solvent, removing water containing hydrochloric acid out of the system by heating again to at least 100 deg.C, and further distilling out the solvent at 130-250 deg.C at 20-0.001 mmHg.
