PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for production useful for synthesizing four optical isomers of muscol and determining absolute configuration thereof, a perfume useful for perfume industry by judging the fragrance of the optical isomers and further a new perfume composition and cosmetic having excellent fragrance. SOLUTION: This method for producing (1R,3R)-muscol represented by the formula I comprises reducing (R)-muscone with an alkali metal salt of tri- secondary butylborohydride.
