An interval X1 between the first and second, and the third and fourth magnetoresistive elements satisfies the term nλ±(1/4), an interval X2 between the first and third, and the second and fourth magnetoresistive effect elements satisfies the term nλ±(1/8), the magnetoresitive elements and the magnetic scale 5 are relatively moved in the magnetic arrangement direction Mh, and the relative movement amount is detected from the output signals of the four magnetoresistive elements.
