PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an output signal small in distorsion from a magnetoresistive element by an outside magnetic field. SOLUTION: A magnetization direction of fixing layers of four magnetoresistive elements GMR1-GMR4 is intersected with a magnetic pole arrangement direction Mh on a magnetic scale 5, and in the state that the outside magnetic field does not act, a magnetization direction of a free layer is the same direction as that of the fixing layer. An interval X1 between the first and second, and the third and fourth magnetoresistive elements satisfies the term nλ±(1/4), an interval X2 between the first and third, and the second and fourth magnetoresistive effect elements satisfies the term nλ±(1/8), the magnetoresitive elements and the magnetic scale 5 are relatively moved in the magnetic arrangement direction Mh, and the relative movement amount is detected from the output signals of the four magnetoresistive elements.
