PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mold for forming an optical element with prolonged service life by suppressing the progress of deterioration by oxidation, and the occurrence of a crack or peeling off of the surface layer, and to provide a method for manufacturing the mold. SOLUTION: This mold for forming an optical element uses an ultra-hard alloy metal essentially comprising tungsten carbide as a base material 9, and a predetermined surface of the base material 9 including at least a forming surface is irradiated with nitrogen ion to be infiltrated so that the outermost surface layer of the predetermined surface is converted to a modified layer 10 containing nitrogen.
