<p>Mobile telephone and its method of cell searching characterised by grouping of cells and searching each group at a different rate. Disclosed embodiment of the invention uses three groups, first containing the serving base station cell (A), the second group comprising all possible immediate handoff candidates (B, C, D, E, F and G) and third group comprising nearby but yet to be detected cells (H). The first group is searched most often (preferably every time a paging signal is sent), the second group is searched less often (preferably once in every two paging channel reception timing), and the third group is searched the least (preferably once in eight paging channel reception timing). In another disclosed embodiment the first group is searched when the other groups are not being searched.</p> |
