PURPOSE: A composition containing, as an active ingredient, an extract of buckwheat, buckwheat husk and a mixture thereof is provided which suppresses progression of liver cancer by increasing gap junctional intercellular communication of liver cells, and by inhibiting DNA synthesis of cancer cells. CONSTITUTION: Buckwheat, buckwheat husk and a mixture thereof are extracted in a solvent including water, ethanol, acetone or methanol. The extract is subjected to chromatography using 40 to 100% ethanol aqueous solution to obtain fractions having inhibition effect of liver cancer. A pharmaceutical composition for suppression of liver cancer characteristically contains the above extract as an active ingredient.
