PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable disinfectant cleaning depending on the dirtiness level of laundry or the like, by varying, over a high-concentration range, the concentration of hypohalogenous acid that prevents the growth of micro-organisms, molding, bad odor and yellowing. SOLUTION: This washing machine is equipped with a disinfection unit 40 including a solid disinfectant 46 made of an organic compound that generates hypohalogenous acid when exposed to water, as well as a housing 43 for holding the disinfectant 46. The unit 40 is placed halfway through a water-supply path 39 leading to a washer tub 26, so that when water is fed into the housing 43, the disinfectant unit 40 can supply a solution containing hypohalogenous acid to the washer tub 26. The unit 40 is also provided with a means for varying the concentration of the hypohalogenous acid to be generated.
