PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display device suited to a monitor display for a cellular phone and a personal digital assistant by securing a display quality equivalent to that of a general liquid crystal display device by using two-level display and multi-level display together, and also achieving an ultra-low power consumption. CONSTITUTION: On one substrate 1, pixel electrodes 4 arranged in a matrix form and TFTs for driving them are formed, and on the other substrate 2, a counter electrode 12 facing each pixel electrode 4 is formed. A liquid crystal 3 is controlled in alignment by a pair of the substrates 1, 2 so that it presents bistability capable of keeping a bistable state having different transmittances without voltage impression but changes over the bistable state with impression of voltage exceeding a specified threshold value Vc, and also presents responsiveness in which, responding to impression of voltage in a specified range not exceeding the threshold value, the transmittance varies continuously. The liquid crystal 3 is selectively controllable by the voltage not less than and less than the threshold value, to perform the two-level display using the bistability and the multi-level display using the responsiveness.
