PURPOSE: An LCD device is provided to prevent lowering of image quality from afterimage during playing motion pictures and to improve the quality by increasing rise response speed of the LCD device. CONSTITUTION: An LCD includes a liquid crystal panel(20) having a liquid crystal layer and an electrode applying voltage to the liquid crystal layer, and a driving circuit supplying driving voltage to the liquid crystal panel. The liquid crystal panel has a liquid crystal cell(20a), a couple of polarizers(25,26) placed between the liquid crystal cells and phase difference compensation elements(23,24) arranged between the polarizers and the liquid crystal cell, and exhibits an extreme value of transmissivity in the voltage-transmissivity characteristic in response to a voltage that is equal to or higher than the highest gray level voltage. The driving circuit supplies the predetermined driving voltage that is obtained by overshooting the gray level voltage corresponding to an input image signal of the current vertical period according to combination of an input image signal of the previous vertical period and the input image signal of the current vertical period to the liquid crystal panel.
