PURPOSE: A method for generating a reference point of a Viterbi decoder is provided, which generates the reference point required in calculating a branch metric(BM) and a path metric(PM) in a constellation plate even when a bit allocated in the Viterbi decoder is odd. CONSTITUTION: According to the method, if an allocated bit is an odd number and sliced bits belong to a virtual area(S510,S520), a nearest constellation point not belonging to the above virtual area is found(S530). Then, reference points are generated using the obtained constellation point as a reference. When the allocated bit is an odd number and the above sliced bits do not belong to the above virtual area or the allocated bit is an even number, the reference points are generated using the above sliced bits as a reference.
