Damping is provided by a ring-shaped closure device (15) which is movable along the piston rod (7) in an axial direction between the piston (5) and the second end piece (4) through which the piston rod extends. A spring (19) is provided for pressing the closure device away from the piston. The closure device and second end piece both have flat faces (20, 25) which face and can come into contact with each other, one or both of these faces being provided with a recess so that when they are in contact with each other, one or more lubricant channels are created to provide a lubricated flow of hydraulic fluid out of the second chamber (10) inside the cylinder (1) between the piston and second end piece.
