PURPOSE: A coin discrimination counter and a counting method are provided, which performs a kind discrimination and counting completely as transporting coins inserted by a user one by one, and reduces a fabrication cost. CONSTITUTION: According to a coin discrimination part(1), a light emitting device(110) includes a number of light emitting devices installed on the top of a counting path, and a photo detection part(120) is installed on the bottom of the counting path to detect a light scanned from the light emitting devices. A key input part(130) inputs the first key signal(K1) to select a counting target and the second key signal(K2) to set the total number of coins to count in advance. And a control part(140) has an input port of the key input part and the photo detection part and has an output port where the first display part(150) and the second display part(160) are connected. The first and the second display part display the total number of counted coins and calculated amount of money of counted coins.
