PURPOSE: An image display device and a display driving method are provided to reduce the power consumption by lowering the power source voltage of a data signal line driving circuit in performing counter AC-driving for line inversion driving and frame inversion driving in the LCD device of an active matrix system. CONSTITUTION: During a non-selection period of scanning signal lines(G), a potential holding circuit(10) holds and fixes the potential of data signal lines(S) being in the floating state due to the high impedance output from a data signal line driving circuit(SD), before varying the counter electrode potential. Therefore, when the counter electrode potential is made to vary, the potential of the data signal lines is not varied up to the undesired high potential due to the capacitance coupling between the data signal lines and the counter electrodes when the counter electrode potential is varied, but the pixel capacitance is charged with electricity corresponding to the gradations to be displayed at relatively low potentials of the data signal lines. Thus, the power source voltage of the data signal driving circuit is lowered, and thereby the power consumption is reduced.
