PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a back light making hard the movement of liquid mercury or, even if the liquid mercury is moved, preventing a brightness from lowering, and a method of manufacturing the back light. SOLUTION: This back light comprises a discharge tube 24 containing mercury and having liquid most mercury 28 excluding gaseous mercury amount at the time of discharge collected to a first position apart from the end part of a discharge tube, a cooling device 32 for cooling the first position of the discharge tube, and at least one second cooling device 33 for cooling the position of the discharge tube different from the first position.
