PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image-reading apparatus and an image-reading method for rapidly reducing the temperature in glass for slit exposure and the periphery even if a number of manuscripts are read by an ADF. SOLUTION: In the image-reading apparatus, a manuscript from the ADF 10 is made still at a reading position B at the lower portion of the glass 13 for slit exposure for reading, and a manuscript on platen glass is allowed to run under the platen glass for reading. The image-reading apparatus has a state detection means for detecting the state of the running body. Then, when a state that is detected by the state detection means exceeds a predetermined threshold, the control apparatus moves the running body 14 from the reading position B to a home position A for returning to the reading position B or the home position A, or a second home position D is provided at a position that is separated from the home position for moving the running body 14.
