PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure and evaluate the defocusing tolerance of an optical pickup at a cost lower than before, without giving the bad influence on the tact. SOLUTION: The method includes a step of applying a focus bias voltage to a focus actuator and adding an outer disturbance voltage to the focus bias voltage, a step of varying the focus bias voltage while measuring a jitter amount, a step of determining the value of the focus bias voltage such that the jitter amount is made the minimum value, a step of taking into a computer the jitter amount within the range of the outer disturbance voltage at the determined focus bias voltage value, and a step of evaluating the jitter characteristics of the optical pickup by the jitter amount within the range of the outer disturbance voltage of which the center is at the taken into and determined focus bias voltage.
