PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the position of an index search signal recorded on a tape. SOLUTION: In order to find the relative position of a magnetic tape (MT) and the magnetic head (31) having a forward head (31F) and a reverse head (31R), a forward signal (FP) or a reverse signal (RP) is recorded on the forward area (FA) or the reverse area (RA) of the calibration area (CA) of a magnetic tape (MT) as the reference to indicate the position by using a forward head (31F) or a reverse head (31R) while forwarding or reversing a blank tape (BT). When detecting the position of an index search signal on the magnetic tape (MT), by either forwarding or reversing it, the index search signal recorded on the tape (MT) is read with the magnetic head (31), while moving the magnetic head (31) in the width direction (B) of the tape at a predetermined speed.
