PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide new magnetic powder which is capable of forming a new magnetic recording medium having much more excellent recording/reproducing characteristics than a conventional magnetic recording medium formed of usual magnetic powder. SOLUTION: Magnetic powder is composed of a core formed of a metal alloy mainly composed of iron and cobalt, and an outer part formed of a compound containing rare earth elements and semi-metal, 5 to 100 nm in grain size, and granular or elliptical in shape. Furthermore, the magnetic powder contains silicon and/or aluminum.
