PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrict reduction in flux of light caused by the back arc phenomenon, when a metallic tubular body is mounted in the opening of a ceramic discharge tube and an electrode holding member is bonded to the tubular body. SOLUTION: An electrode holding structure 12 for a high pressure discharge lamp having a ceramic discharge lamp filled with an ionizing light emitting substance and a starter gas is provided. This structure 12 comprises a metallic tubular body 5A to be mounted in the opening 1b, the electrode holding member 8A which is bonded to the tubular body 5A and at least partially arranged in the inner space 7 of the tubular body 5A, an electrode 9 attached to the electrode holding member 8A, and a coated layer 6 formed on the inner peripheral surface 5b of the tubular body 5A. The coated layer 6 comprises at least a metal containing tungsten, or at least a composite material of a metal containing tungsten and ceramic.
