The support and tensioner for a piece of supple material such as woven or non-woven or leather consists of a male plate (1) with a projection (4), a female plate (2) and fastenings to hold them together so they can be separated when required. The fastenings are in the form of at least one permanent magnet (13) on one of the plates, and a magnetic element (7) on the other. In a variant of the design both plates can be fitted with magnets set in a ring (12) of an insulating material such as aluminium.
