PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To check the contamination in a reading window in a system for preventing rapid processing and high throughput that are advantages of sheet through reading from being lost. SOLUTION: When a user notices image deterioration, the execution of a contamination detection mode in the reading window 12 is instructed from an operation section, the reading window is cleaned according to the result for effectively connecting a checking operation as much as possible without performing at timing that is predetermined by an apparatus as conventionally, thus preventing rapid processing and high throughput that are the advantages of sheet through reading from being lost by an unneeded operation. Contamination is detected by the set paper of a white manuscript, no operation is made to read a reference white board that is provided at a position that is separated from the reading position for performing an individual operation of sheet through reading, and shading correction is made by the white manuscript since contamination detection is common to the generation process of shading data.
