PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove the offensive smell peculiar to a sea urchin shell as much as possible without complicating the pigment extraction step and to inhibit the pigment run-off on washing the sea urchin shell to improve color development and fastness. SOLUTION: The method for preparing the sea urchin shell dye comprises (1-1) a washing step of washing a sea urchin shell as the raw material of the dye with sea water after collecting the edible portion of a sea urchin, (1-2) a water-removing step of removing water from the sea urchin shell after washing, (1-3) a boiling step of boiling the sea urchin shell after removing water, and (1-4) a filtration step of filtering a dye liquid using the sea urchin shell having a vital reaction as the sea urchin shell and sea water of <=15 deg.C, desirably <=5 deg.C as the washing water in the washing step. Since the washing is effected while the sea urchin shell has the vital reaction, the generation of the offensive smell peculiar to the sea urchin shell can be inhibited due to the absence of putrefaction. Further, the use of the comparatively low temperature washing water makes the pigment difficult to dissolve, and the pigment run-off can be inhibited.
