An optical waveguide comprising a clad (1), and a core part (20) buried in the clad (1) and serving as a waveguide, wherein glass materials are combined such that the difference between the coefficients of thermal expansion (α1-α2) has an absolute value in the range of 0-9×10-7/°C, assuming α1 is the coefficient of thermal expansion of a glass material becoming the core part (20) and α2 is the coefficient of thermal expansion of a glass material becoming the clad (1). When glass materials having different refractive indexes and different coefficients of thermal expansion are bonded directly and an upper clad layer is formed by sputtering, an optical waveguide can be fabricated at a lower temperature than by a conventional system thereby reducing the labor and time required for fabrication, and an inexpensive optical waveguide having a reduced propagation loss can be provided along with a fabrication method thereof.
|
