New fluorinated cyclopenta(a)naphthalene compounds (I) are claimed. New fluorinated cyclopenta(a)naphthalene compounds of formula (I) (sic) are claimed. R<1> = H, F, CF3, OCF3, OCF2H, OCFH2, 1-12C alkyl or alkoxy or 2-12C alkenyl or alkenyloxy, where one non-terminal, non-oxygen neighboring CH2 group may be replaced by -O- or -C(=O)O-, or one -CH2- group is replaced by -C?=C- or cyclopropan-1,2-diyl and/or one or more H are replaced by F; R<2> = H, 1-12C alkyl or alkoxy or 2-12C alkenyl or alkenyloxy, where one non-terminal, non-oxygen neighboring CH2 group may be replaced by -O- or -C(=O)O-, or one -CH2- group is replaced by -C?=C- or cyclopropan-1,2-diyl and/or one or more H are replaced by F, provided that R<2> is not H when R<1> is H, F, CF3, OCF3, OCF2H or OCFH2; M<1> = -C(=O)O-, -OC(=O)-, -CH2O-, -OCH2-, -CF2O-, -OCF2-, -C?=C-, -CH2CH2-, -CF2CF2-, -CF=CFC(=O)O- or a single bond; M<2> = -C(=O)O-, -OC(=O)-, -CH2O-, -OCH2-, -CH2CH2-, -CF2CF2- or a single bond; A<1>, A<2> = phenylene-1,4-diyl (optionally mono- or di-substituted by F), cyclohexan-1,4-diyl (optionally mono- or di-substituted by F), cyclohexen-1,4-diyl (optionally mono-substituted by F) or 1,3-dioxan-2,5-diyl; m, n = 0 or 1; m+n = 0 or 1; and L<1>-L<5> = H or F provided that at least one is F. L<1>-L<3> are H when L<5> is F; L<4> and L<5> are H when L<3> is F. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a liquid crystal mixture containing at least one compound of formula (I); (2) a liquid crystal display containing the liquid crystal mixture. |
