PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a staircase and a method of constructing the same, facilitating adjustment of the vertical and horizontal positions of treads. SOLUTION: The staircase 1 includes treads 20, risers 30 serving as vertical portions between the treads 20, and cores 40 secured to the treads 20 for supporting the undersides of the treads. The tread 20 and the riser 30 are constructed of a sheet cover member 10. The sheet cover member 10 comprises a wooden base 11 and a cover sheet 12 made of resin which is bonded to the surface of the base 11. The tread 20 comprises a tread body 21 forming each step of the staircase, and a folded part 22 protecting the horizontal cross section of the tread body 21. The riser 30 comprises a riser body 31 held perpendicular to the tread 20, and a receiving part 32 connected to the upper surface of the tread 20 for receiving the back of the riser body 31.
