[Also in Division F1] A fibre-reinforced article, e.g. an aerofoilshaped blade for a fluid flow machine such as a gas turbine engine, is produced by disposing a plurality of sheet-like laminations of mouldable material, e.g. synthetic resin such as epoxy resin, metallic or carbonaceous material, adjacent to but spaced from each other in face to face relationship, employing fluid jets to entrain individual fibres or bundles of fibrous material in parallel array and to introduce fibrous material, e.g. carbon fibres formed from polyacrylonitrile, glass fibres or boron fibres, in parallel array between the or each adjacent pair of laminations and moulding the laminations and fibrous material together to form the article. The laminations are preferably reinforced by longitudinally extending fibres which are arranged parallel to each other and which extend orthogonally of the fibrous material introduced by the fluid jets and further fibres may be introduced by passing them through the laminations by means of needles so that they extend orthogonally of the fibres in the laminations and also extend orthogonally of the fibrous material introduced by the fluid jets. The fibrous material may be introduced from opposite sides of the laminations. In Fig. 1 a plurality of laminations 13 are supported by means of clamps 12 between two spaced mould parts which are movable into and out of an operative moulding position and a fluid jet device 15 having a plurality of fluid jets 16 e.g. air jets or water jets, is provided to introduce transverse fibres 17 between each adjacent pair of laminations 13 in a direction extending orthogonally of reinforcing fibres 14. Further fibres may be passed through laminations 13 by means of needles so that they extend orthogonally both of fibres 14 and fibres 17. The mould parts and support clamps 12 are movable with respect to a bank of formers 22 between which fibrous material may be passed to reinforce the root of the blade in the case of the production of rotor blades. |
