The device has a housing (24) containing a transmitter for a measuring signal (34,36), preferably a light beam from e.g. a laser, and a receiver for the signal reflected from a target surface (16,18). An evaluation unit determines the distance of a reference point (14) of the housing from the target surface, for controlling a read-out display. The housing has a socket (28) for a holder (12,13), e.g. a tripod, the presence of the holder being detected by a device within the housing, for providing a new reference point for the evaluation unit.
