PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnesium hydroxide flame retardant having excellent mechanical properties and excellent water resistance. SOLUTION: This method for producing the magnesium hydroxide flame retardant comprises simultaneously subjecting the coarse powder of natural brucite ore to both a grinding treatment and a particle surface treatment with a medium grinding machine in the presence of an alcohol phosphate surface- treating agent in a temperature range of 120 to 220 deg.C to obtain the particles having an average particle diameter of 1 to 5μm and each having the coating layer of the surface-treating agent.
